Bureau of Justice Assistance STOP School Violence Prevention & Mental Health Training Program Grant Application – Lieutenant Magnuson & Commander Caughey, Benton County Sheriff’s Office
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is seeking applications for funding under the Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act Program. This program furthers the DOJ mission by supporting state, local, and tribal jurisdictions in improving efforts to reduce violent crime by creating school safety training and mental health programs for school personnel and students. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office developed the idea for the School Violence and Threat Reduction Program, which will consist of a cross-disciplinary team, mental health professions, a safety plan, threat assessment, and individualized training models and curriculums. These models and curriculums will be based on independent analysis and data collection derived from 3-D laser scanner mapping and analysis technology. The Sheriff’s Office recommends submitting an application for funding through this grant in the amount of $250,000 to provide the necessary training, equipment, and personnel to properly develop reliable and peer-reviewed school safety plans. Commissioner Delvin moved to approve the Resolution authorizing the Sheriff’s Office to submit an application for funding under the FY 2019 STOP School Violence Prevention & Mental Health Training Program grant in the amount of $250,000. Commissioner Small seconded. Motion passed.
